Blue and White Roundtable: Au Revoir, Football.
January 9, 2008 by Run Up The Score!
It’s the last Blue and White Roundtable for a while, so thanks to all the bloggers who wrote questions, answered faithfully, and created great conversation for everyone to enjoy:
Black Shoe Diaries
The Nittany Line
There Is No Name On My Jersey
William Yurasko
Alex Grier’s Nittany Notebook
And of course, thanks to the readers for being generally hilarious and insightful throughout the year. It’s no fun without comments, after all.
Mike from Black Shoe Diaries wrote this week’s questions.
Let’s start off with a positive note. When you look back on the 2007 season five or ten years from now, what will be your fondest memory? It doesn’t necessarily have to be Penn State related.
I’ll be happy for Rodney Kinlaw. His career was held back by injuries and being stuck behind Tony Hunt on the depth chart. Heading into this season he was still looking up at Austin Scott. We know what happened to Scott, but Kinlaw filled the role of starting tailback better than anyone could have expected. He improved steadily throughout the season, and I’ll be absolutely amazed if he’s not a mid-to-late round pick in the NFL draft. With his receiving skills and speed, he’ll be a sought after player for any number of teams.

What should the Big Ten conference consider as its highest priority this off season?
I would suggest that the conference strongly encourage its members to play stiffer non-conference competition, but that will never happen due to the schools’ financial concerns. A more practical idea would be to closely examine the quality of officiating in the league — and I don’t say this in a tinfoil hat, “the world is out to get Penn State” sort of way. The officiating throughout the league stinks out loud and needs to be addressed.
Clark or Devlin? Whose camp are you in and why?
I’m in the Devlin camp because I believe his running skills are roughly equal to Clark’s, but his passing skills are far superior. I’ve said multiple times that I’m not against some sort of two-QB system next year, because both guys can help the team in many ways. The team loves Clark, and I think it’s important for him to be on the field in certain situations. He’s shown he can do what a quarterback is supposed to do — move the team down the field. I just hope both guys get a chance to prove themselves.

Which position not including quarterback is your biggest concern looking ahead to 2008?
I’m truly concerned about our safeties and the general lack of depth at running back. This answer is subject to change if Justin King declares for the NFL draft.
Lightning Round
Who is the early favorite to win the Big Ten in 2008?
It has to be Ohio State, although they may be losing a significant group of juniors to the NFL. It’s hard to tell how long it’ll take Rich Rodriguez to impliment his system at Michigan, or who he’ll have to actually run it on the field next season. Penn State will have a metric assload of returning starters, but their conference road schedule is beyond brutal.
How many Fulmer Cup points for Penn State this summer?
Okay, now we’re talking. I’m a gambling man, so I’ll set the over/under at 14 points (hey, just like the Penn State offense!). That’s enough for two minor alcohol violations, a fight or two, and a player smoking trees outside of Nittany Apartments.

Now that the offseason has begun, what will you keep your mind occupied with until fall practice? (from WFY)
Well, there’s always spring practice and the Blue/White game, which we’ll all overanalyze for absolutely no good reason other than boredom. In reality, it’s likely to be a tumultuous and interesting off-season for Penn State, so we can only hope that the “down” periods won’t be too boring.
Otherwise, perhaps the Phillies will keep me entertained until August.

1- Kinlaw was the best surprise of the season and seeing Royster get some snaps and excelling was great.
2- The officials need a serious upgrade and background check.
3- Devlin or he transfers.
4- PSU should be the favorite
5- With better senior leadership no off field incidents much to the dismay of M1EK.
One fight.
Two underage drinkings.
I’m optimistic.
1. Same as every year - tailgating with the crew before, sometimes during, and after the games. Win or lose, we still booze! The 3:30 or later starts were all great days in the lot, it not always on the field. Road trip to Chicago/Illinois as well. Much fun.
2. Fix schedule so we play after Thanksgiving. Figure out their stupid cable network.
3. Doesn’t matter what I think. Unless an injury occurs, #17 is the starter. If he can’t pass, then we need to also work Devlin into the offense.
4. Safety. Two white guys starting at safety? Seriously? Also, is there a kicker of the future? It might be nice to make a 40+ yarder here and there.
5. THE Ohio State University, who will be the first conference champ NOT invited to play in the BCS. After the last two turds, they’ll be lucky to get an invite to the Sun Bowl. Viva El Paso!
6. 3 underage, 2 misdemeanors, and a partridge in a pear tree (which, apparently, lets JA kick you out of school for a semester - no partridges on campus rule).
7. Planning Blue White tailgate menu, reviewing Blue White game, and prepping for regular season. Maybe we should have brought back the Deep Fried White Castle burgers for the season after all. Watch for: Grill on trailer hitch addition so we can take up more space in the red lot.
I would have to say the NFL draft and some college BBall.
// Watch for: Grill on trailer hitch addition so we can take up more space in the red lot. //
This reminds me, since nobody took me up on the offer to donate money to America’s Second Harvest, I used the NFL Shop gift card to purchase one of these for tailgating purposes:
http://www.nflshop.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2503763
Figured it might be useful for something.
RUTS, i have one of those, it works well, but some pointers:
-the lid does not lock on very well, so if you’re cooking but also playing catch next to the grill, make sure to bring your deon butler hands.
-PSU has a ‘gas-only’ policy, which doesn’t mean much except make sure you dont run out of coals or forget the lighter fluid
1. Offensive line.
2. 9-game conference schedule.
3. No idea. Curse the stupidity of not allowing either one any real snaps this year.
4. CB. Even if King stays.
5. Illinois
6. 10 points.
And STL, you’re a Bad Fan when your response to comments about off-the-field behavior is to attack the messenger.
SWEET. It gets bigger and badder every year, mang, as we’re going to be rolling in 2-3 grills, a deep fryer, and a stove top burner set for each game. Nice. We can definitely assign some tasks to you & your keg-a-que.
Now we just need a portable kegerator to hide in the back of the truck or the motorhome, and we’re in business.
Hang on - by my calculations, it’s 100 days until Blue White. Definitely need to get a planning session together…..
1-Dwills punt return against Nd, Maurice Evans’ fumble return against Indiana, but really, my actual fondest memory will be ND going 3-9
2- Better OOC scheduling
3- From the little I have seen, Clark. Clark is big, fast, has a good arm and the respect of his teammates. Looking forward to watching him play.
4. CB
5-Illini should be, OSU will be.
6. It’s gotta get better. Can’t guess a number, but much less than this year.
7. PSU Basketball, we’re 2-0 in conference! Then I quit paying attention to sports until the fall comes.
M1EK — Sorry bro I just love busting your stones, as Cartman from south park said “M1EK has sand in his vagina”
The fact you get sooo fired up make me smile everytime you post.
I think you overblow the off the field stuff and the rest of us don’t give it enough attention, there should be a happy middle ground but until then…it’s on.
1. Anthony Morelli’s eligibility ran out.
2. The Network.
3. Devlin for the same reasons RUTS mentioned, but I don’t really mind Clark. He may not be able to throw, but he has every intangible Morelli didn’t so even if he sucks he’ll be more likeable.
4. Ohio State. 2007 was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
5. I don’t remember how the scoring system works, so I’ll guess a couple of underages.
6. NFL Playoffs (go Seahawks!), recruiting, March Madness, baseball (fantasy and real), good weather, and beer.
Oops-forgot #4. Not a position, but the entire secondary.
network network network!!!
regarding OSU’s rebuilding, that only works if everyone stays, but its looking like a very large group of these “developing” players are outa there. Meaning they will be rebuilding again, yet still more talented than the rest of the conference.

Oh, and our ladies were the hottest too.
It really has been a remarkable run for Penn State in the other sports. Too bad more of them aren’t on Comcast.
Of course, that wouldn’t work out very well for my relationship.
Ladyfriend: “What the hell are you watching now?”
RUTS: “Penn State women’s gymnastics. It’s, you know, research for the blog.”
Ladyfriend: “Oh yeah? What’s up with the box of tissues?”
RUTS: “Uh, I get really emotional during the floor exercise. Very dramatic stuff.”
any updates from the Paterno meeting this week w/ AD?
Didn’t happen yet.
