And nobody would remotely care if Terrelle Pryor wasn’t involved. But he was.
In a tension-packed game befitting a championship stage instead of a quarterfinal matchup, Pryor jawed at the South Fayette students. His actions only incited them further.
Two South Fayette students were ejected from the gymnasium during the fourth quarter. The first left peacefully as the Jeannette fans cheered. The second made a major mistake. He put his hands on a policemen attempting to escort him from the stands.
Considering the things that are said during basketball games, imagine what those two uttered.
As dumb as they were, Pryor topped them after Jeannette pulled away in the overtime.
He continued his dialogue with fans. Then, after postgame handshakes, Pryor immediately went toward the student section.
Following a ridiculous, prolonged exchange, Pryor’s teammates intervened. Why they didn’t stop him before is unknown. Why his coaches allowed it to happen is an even greater injustice.
Undoubtedly, some people will use this to trigger that familiar, “he’s a douchebag, we don’t need him anyway!” defense mechanism. When you boil it down to its essence, it’s a high-tension state playoff game filled with overzealous students, stereotypical tough-guy local cops, and hand-wringing columnists there to provide condemnation.
But hey, it’s a slow time of year. So it’s a story.
(Also, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette coverage here — no guarantee they publish any relevant or current facts when it comes to a Pryor story, though.)
Update: Come on, this is pretty funny.

Update #2: Hmmm. First hand accounts are starting to filter in, and they’re not flattering for Pryor. To put it very mildly. It’s quite possible that the columnist above wasn’t being overdramatic, but was actually doing Pryor a favor by under-reporting the incident. And I feel more than a little stupid for jumping to a conclusion so early.

Look at the kids in the front row. One is clearly scared and covering his ears. The rest are soaking it up, despite this not being anything near how a role model should act. Pretty lousy behavior all around.
Crop them out, and the rest is funny as hell.

It’s really hysterical to see how young those high school students look, especially after watching countless movies and TV shows featuring 23 year old people portraying high schoolers. The kid is the Tressel costume looks like he’s 12.

Taunting fans?! If he comes to Penn State, he really could be the next Anthony Morelli!

If the account on FOS is true, it is a bit troubling. Still, he seems like the kind of kid JoePa could sit down and provide guidance to. I can almost see it now…
Paterno: Now Terrelle, I heard you got into it pretty bad with those kids. Tempers flared. How might you have handled it differently?
Pryor: Well, I guess I could’ve flipped them off repeatedly…
Paterno: And…???
Pryor: I could’ve screamed, “Do you know who I am?!?”
Paterno: (wiping away tears) Aw Terrelle, you’re like the son who can play quarterback I never had…

I was in the student section, and it was obvious that pryor was pretty ridiculous. The conflict started with a simple statement, “nice shot pryor” after he missed about 4 shots in a row during the warm up before the game started….he then came over and threatened to kill all of us, followed up with some other choice words, all in front of the row of elementary aged kids…..yeah, real nice.

What you failed to mention, MS20, was your student sections racial slurs directed at Pryor…
MS20'08 // June 2, 2008 at 11:09 am
yea…racial slurs….considering you were in the student section…….stop trying to defend pryor. If you were in the student section, or for that matter, in attendence it was clear to everyone, from elementary students to high school alumni at the game that he is not what people say he is.
