Truthiness And The Jaw
March 13, 2008 by Run Up The Score!
Heard an interesting tidbit at a meeting this morning. Somebody very close to Graham Spanier told the person I spoke to that not only was Bill Cowher on campus a few weeks ago, there was also a meeting between Cowher, Tim Curley, Graham Spanier, and Joe Paterno himself.
As a disclaimer, I don’t have any sort of independent confirmation of the meeting. Still, for those of you holding out hope that Bill Cowher will someday appear on the Penn State sidelines screaming nothing but “Let’s Go! Let’s Go!”, as he’s prone to do, this should make your dreams a little sweeter.

thought this was all a joke

guess i was wrong (not that any of you haven’t read it yet, but just so you know its just as funny the second time)
That is awesome. It just wouldn’t get any better than that for PSU or for Cowher. PSU gets a Pennsylvania legend and Cowher gets to become a God!
this is probably the same feeling one gets when they fantasize about winning the lottery, being able to dunk, the eagles winning the superbowl (yes, i am an iggles fan), or having a date that doesn’t end in a felony.
it’s bliss, but it probably ain’t gonna happen.
still great fodder to waste the mind numbing ennui until B&W.
Cowher was at PSU to ‘consult’ with the program, however he has no intentions of ever coaching at PSU and sold his home in NC to purchase another home just a few miles away last week. This is old news, and although it was true he was in town, he is not interested in the coaching the program.
Am I the only guy that doesn’t get even a twinge of a chubby at the prospect of Cowher bellowing on our sidelines?
Am I missing something about this guy?
Pete: I don’t get it either.
smoke = fire
Tim Curley, Graham Spanier, and/or Joe Paterno are interested in looking at NFL coaches. None of them have ever been NFL coaches and are not that familar with the talent. Enter Bill Cowher, who I understand has ties to the NFL and their coaching fraternity.
If this means that the coach search is not limited to coaches at colleges in states bordering the Delaware River, good for us.
As any self respecting Pennsylvanian outside of the greater (term used to designate size not worth) Pittsburgh area the thought of Bill Cowher on the PSU sideline isn’t only not exciting, but in fact it actually caused a small amount of vomit to enter the back of my mouth. If this is the best we can do, viva la JoePa!
“Tim Curley, Graham Spanier, and/or Joe Paterno are interested in looking at NFL coaches”
Thaaaaat’s an awfully big leap to make. What on earth about Joe Paterno or Graham $panier makes you think they’re interested in hiring an NFL coach (current or former) to take over?
Joe wants the next coach to come from within the staff. He’s said this numerous, numerous times. $panier wants to pay 60 cents on the dollar. Do those philosophies sound like they might want to lure an NFL coach?
Wouldn’t the obvious topic of this meeting be succession plans? You have a long time coach who has recently retired, wouldn’t he be a good person to consult on such matters?
PSUalum02,
why all the hate against cowher? In the words of joe pa, “he was a pretty darn good, solid, football coach”. He lead the steelers to two superbowls, winning one of them. He also lead the steelers to one of the best overall records during his tenure. Cowher is a great motivator and emphasizes defense and the running game. That sounds an awful like what psu has always relied on.
i would not mind cowher coaching psu at all.
can you imagine him walking in to a recruits home, the look, the chin, the ring.
easy sell to any 18 year old
If we get Cowher we have to renew the Pitt series. I want to see Cowher on our sideline beating the snot out of Wannstedt. If it goes into overtime they should stand at midfield with their noses two inches apart yelling and spitting all over each other until one of them gives up.
Penn State has never played in a Super Bowl. This is the wrong move for Cowher.
I have to agree w/ #13. The whole ring thing is working for Charlie Weis.
I personally have had about enough of the 80/20 split in running and passing. Cowher’s offensive scheme (which I am still trying to figure out how it won the superbowl, well thats not true we all know it was big ten style officiating…just kidding yinsers) is boring and outdated in the college game. We may as well keep Joe around. My main concern though is that being a solid pro coach doesn’t always guarantee suceess at the college level, its a very different animal. Heck sometimes the inverse appears to be true, look at the best college coach to come from the pros, he was a terrible NFL coach. I haven’t really heard any candidates that are all that exciting. One good season in the big east is not really impressive (thanks for the interest Schiano). So who knows. I guess I just don’t salivate over the face of a football team I have grown up hating coaching my beloved blue and white.
To number 15:
Yes that may be true, but Bill Cowher does not require doors to be taken off their hinges just to fit through them.
ahh…it appears i meant number 16
Has there ever been a guy who won a SB as a pro head coach that left and coached college? OC and DC’s maybe, but I can’t think of a HC.
Most pro HC’s that end up in college end up there because their time at the top level was either shitty or, at best, very average (Carroll, Saban, Spurrier, Petrino, Whanstash).
Also, the biggest advantage to a guy like the chin, in my opinion, is the jump start he gives the program. Its what happened at USC, Bama, and ND. Thats the kind of kick in the balls PSU needs.
#20: Bill Walsh
When I first read the title of the post, I read it as Truthiness and the JEW, then I looked closer.
I thought it was about something else, Boratish
Haha.. STL, you weren’t the only one. Now I feel a little bit better and can avoid having to sign up for sensitivity training.
I am a Steeler fan and in concept Cowher would be great, but I have my reservations.
His two Super Bowl appearances were nice, but it could have just as easily been four or six. As I watched the Patriots have their success over the last few years, I have come to resent Cowher for not winning more of those home AFC championship games, Spygate notwithstanding.
What gives me pause is whether the big game issues would continue at PSU…
He sure could get kids to sign and play here, no doubting that. Wannstache would never sign another PA kid, ever.
I’m in the “excited? not so much” camp about Cowher too. So we could get any recruit from Western PA that we want. So what? Western PA football isn’t what it used to be. And isn’t the biggest reason most people want a change is a move from our current stale offensive scheme? I don’t see how Cowher brings that. One thing I do like though is that the Steelers usually were pretty aggressive on D. I don’t know, I guess at this point I’m not overly excited about any option (Bradley, Schiano, Cowher), but at the same time think any change might be good.
The Steelers did some interesting things, offensively. Not that I’ve broken down the X’s and O’s or anything, but just generally speaking — there’s always a trick play or three, and they’re not afraid to put as many athletes on the field as possible.
Such a big part of college football is recruiting, and I think he’d be great at it. Not that this is ever going to happen.
The Cowher thing is really funny, because those who would love to see it can easily make a compelling argument for it. At least to the point where a reasonable person could hear it and think, “well, it’s not that fucking ridiculous.”
“it’s not that fucking ridiculous”
Now that should be the standard for avoiding summary judgment. I like the ring of it.
[...] Perhaps he wanted to see the place where his predecessor will be coaching next. (Just kidding, but RUTS has reported that Bill Cowher met with Spanier and Paterno as well as Curley when he visited University Park [...]
