Brian’s liking Michigan’s chances with Kevin Newsome, who is one of the top two QB’s Penn State has been targeting for the past year (not including that Pryor fiasco). Not good news for PSU fans. Not even a little bit.
All of Penn State’s QB eggs appear to be in the basket of California’s Tate Forcier, who has already visited PSU on his own dime. Still, if Penn State doesn’t get him, it’s quickly on to Plan B kids, if not worse.
Oh, and we also need WR’s, OT’s, and DB’s. Badly. Not a good time to be in a desperate position, given our coaching uncertainty.
I’m not even going to worry about recruiting this year. Just not worth it.
Kevin Newsome better not be expecting any “family values” at Michigan
Just read BSD (I love Mike’s work BTW) but some of those people are Joe4ever types.
If you even mention that Joe barely leaves to recruit you hate PSU, all other coachs that text kids are bums, and a hand written letter and no other contact should produce top players.
How hard will the assistants recruit this critical year??? They don’t even know who will be back yet or if a enitre new staff is coming in to happy valley.
I love Joe but being critical of his under performance is just honest…nothing more
Does Forcier have some connection to PSU, either familial or otherwise? Don’t hear of many recruits visiting at their own expense, especially from long distance.
Is there something going on here that’s a ray of sunshine for us?

If I were the assistants , I’d be busier looking for a new job since no one knows what the future holds.
Sure seems like Joe is doing what’s in the best interest of the program………….OR…he could just be a big spoiled baby that wants to go out kicking and screaming.

I am somewhere in the middle but the longer this goes on the more I am leaning towards hanging on till death. I would like to see Joe have a great year and go off in the sunset, but we need a public plan to help w/ recruiting.
I know many people who define themselves by their job will pass away not long after they retire, I think that is a big factor which I understand. This is very common among cops, firefighters, and I am sure it carries over w/ HC’s.

(required substantive football comment: this hurts a bit, Newsome would have been nice to run the spread HD, assuming that is what we run in 2 or 3 years which, in turn, assumes continuity in the current staff which, in turn, assumes that Spanier doesnt let Joe go after the year. So, if we keep Joe, Jay and Spread HD, this is bad - unless we get Forcier; if not this may be irrelevant)

Why does everyone seem to forget that these are KIDS, and KIDS are prone to change their minds? Hell, it happens every year right up until signing day.
But no, a kid not signing with us RIGHT NOW somehow winds up translating into “We’ll have 2 wins in 2014, OMG LOL!!”
What’s even more laughable is that these guys are juniors in high school, so who the hell even knows which players are going to bring it their senior year?
But the “experts” said that these are the guys, so I guess we’re fucked. Damn. We suck again. Doom and gloom.

Look Joe is gonna be around another 20 years. His mom lived well into her 90’s. If they just give the man a life contract the recruiting would pick up again. Then if he wants to step down in say 5 or 10 years he can do it on his own. Blame this one on Spanier.
