Something Borrowed, Something New: Approval Ratings
May 3, 2008 by Run Up The Score!
In order to best fill the void left when Hillary and OBAMA departed Pennsylvania, some political-style polls for your consideration. And yes, I stole the exact wording that polling organizations like Pew and Rasmussen use. That means simple, straightforward answers. No hedging allowed. ”I want Tom Bradley to be the next head coach, but not if Jay is around, because Jay’s a poopyhead and poop make me feel ashamed” is not a legitimate response*. See a doctor for that.
This will be the first installment of a regular feature, and the results will be tracked over the course of the year. Monthly or bi-weekly (fortnightly!) for now, weekly during the season.
To conserve space on the front page, please click through for the polls. Come on. You’re not that lazy.
Well done.

Polls close on Tuesday at noon. Answer honestly and provide a little rationale, if you please.
Graham Spanier:
Joe Paterno:
Next head coach (if you choose “Other”, please type in a name below):
* - And let’s face it, way too long for PollDaddy’s capabilities, anyway.

No (not tough enough), No (destroying his legacy - risking bringing the program lower than it was when he took it over from Engle), Bradley (give him a shot; he’s earned it).
Give Scrap a shot, he waited his turn, paid his dues, the whole bit….
I changed the wording slightly, because the “do you approve or disapprove” doesn’t match up with “yes or no” answers. Obviously.
I wonder how many of the “Other” choices in the last question are votes for Bill Cowher.
#4
At least one.
1) Don’t know (all we can do is speculate as to what Spanier is doing) 2) Yes. (JoePa exerts class and is the greatest representative this university has.) 3) Other: Cowher, McQueary, Kelly…
I fully admit i’m one of the few that still see Joe as a good coach but blinded in his desire to keep Jay on. I’d love to just get rid of Jay and keep Joe.
1) Don’t know; 2) Don’t know (not “happy” but not “disapproving” either - who am I to “disapprove”? - btw - engle never had a losing season - in 1965 PSU was 5-5 in 1966 5-5 - we all know what Joe “did” after that - but Joe’s first losing season was 1988); 3) Other (I seem to have a fear of commitment) - a) want new blood; like Scratch but don’t think he’s a head coach. b) Schiano, style/game coach wise, is Paterno (without the experience) and I’m ready for a change. c) of the 3 Golden would be my pick but I’d rather see him stay at Temple (they need him).
1. Don’t know. Ask me again in January. It could be that Spanier has told Joe this year is it, Joe doesn’t want a farewell tour, and Spanier plans to look elsewhere for a new coach. So, we’ll see. 2. I put No, but I agree with PSUgirl-I don’t necessarily “disapprove”, nor do I claim to know enough about what he does on a daily basis. But, the lack of visiting recruits is frustrating. 3. Other, I went with Bob Stoops. Just for shits and giggles. But of the other three choices, I’d take Bradley.
1. No. I don’t like having to sacrifice anything, so the spoiled brat in me wants my cake (a head coach willing to do all the tasks necessary of a head coach) and wants to eat it, too (read: no loss of a recruiting class thanks to waiting until the last minute to hire a new head coach).
2. No. Until Joe Paterno leaves State College on a regular basis to recruit and eliminates the dead weight on the coaching staff, I disapprove. For clarity… by regular, I don’t mean once every two years.
3. Make that two votes for Cowher (and I’m not even a Pittsburgh guy!). I like Scrap and all, but come on, talk about star power that would generate tons of media interest and consequently recruit interest, and Cowher would be the grandest choice of them all. It’s not going to happen in a million years, but that would be the best choice in my opinion.
