And on and on.  Obviously the Penn State blogs and message boards have been pounding this issue relentlessly, but now it seems that columnists across the state have decided it’s safe to turn the Joe Paterno contract situation into a full-fledged Piñata Party.
This is what happens when a coach spends decades talking down to beat reporters.  It’s too [...]

That whole contract thingy. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports on the PSU trustees meeting, which was held at the Mayflower hotel in Washington, D.C.  Presumably, the conference included complimentary Emporer’s Club ladies as well as a 700 pound gorilla in the meeting room.
Two members of Penn State’s Board of Trustees yesterday told the Post-Gazette that negotiations regarding [...]

The Menu

Is something cooking?
The Penn State Board of Trustees is expected to address Paterno’s future during meetings today and tomorrow at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington.
“It’ll definitely be on the menu,” said a trustee who requested anonymity.
Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and president Graham Spanier recently met with the 81-year-old Paterno, who is set [...]

Heard an interesting tidbit at a meeting this morning.  Somebody very close to Graham Spanier told the person I spoke to that not only was Bill Cowher on campus a few weeks ago, there was also a meeting between Cowher, Tim Curley, Graham Spanier, and Joe Paterno himself.
As a disclaimer, I don’t have any sort [...]

Tim Curley does not share your sense of urgency regarding the Joe Paterno contract situation.
Curley said he spoke with Paterno over the past week, but declined to go into more detail.
“Those discussions are going to continue,” Curley said. “Once we feel like we have something to report, we’ll report out at that time.”

Curley said he [...]

I thought Dan Connor was the only one who wanted to spend time with Wilford Brimley.  Turns out Joe Paterno does, too*:
Purdue football coach Joe Tiller spent part of a recent Nike coaches trip discussing the ins and outs of coaching succession plans with another guy named Joe — Penn State’s Joe Paterno.
Tiller will retire [...]

Grass Is Greener

One of the first columns to publically advocate skipping over Tom Bradley in favor of an outside candidate?
Donnie Collins, in the Scranton Times-Tribune, essentially asks “Band-Aid or Plastic Surgery?”:
Most calls for a succession plan have centered around defensive coordinator Tom Bradley. On the surface, Bradley is a top-notch recruiter, a heck of a coach and someone who [...]

Look, we all know that Penn State football news is generally slow during the off-season. Barring any unforeseen legal shenanigans, there are two major stories lurking out there. First, there’s Terrelle Pryor, who still hasn’t been able to schedule an official visit to Penn State due to the PIAA state basketball playoffs. [...]

Today’s David Jones column, in many ways, is a restatement of what we’ve collectively known for a while.  Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier are still engaged in a game of chicken while Tom Bradley and other coaches who have given most, if not all, of their professional lives to Penn State football twist in the [...]

Yes, this is likely to become ugly.  It’s just a matter of how public the ugliness will become.
You’ll recall David Jones’ Patriot-News article from last week:
A canvassing of a few of the school’s 30-some trustees and other significant influence peddlers in the State hierarchy indicates Spanier finally has enough power to make this Paterno’s last [...]
